What is Eco?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) could enable you to get funding to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Under the ECO scheme, gas and electricity suppliers such as British Gas, Eon, Npower, SSE, EDF Energy and Scottish Power are obligated to help households which require measures to increase their energy efficiency. Under the ECO scheme, the following measures are available to increase the energy efficiency of your house;

Loft insulation
Cavity wall insulation
Solid wall insulation
Underfloor insulation
Boiler replacement/repair

These measures are tailored to reduce the cost of keeping your house warm and help decrease the amount of carbon emissions. To avail the above listed measures, you need to be a home owner and recipient of some certain benefits. According to the government, from April 2015 to September 2018, approximately 800,000 have benefitted from the ECO scheme. A further 75,000 people have availed these benefits under the new ECO3 scheme.

The new ECO3 scheme, which runs from December 2018 to 31 March 2022, is exclusively targeted at customers who have low income or living in fuel poverty. A total of 6.5 million households are eligible under the ECO3 scheme. The scheme aims at providing energy efficiency measures to 900,000 homes every year. Around 35,000 households will have their broken heating systems replaced around 17,000 will have their solid walls improved. According to the scheme, suppliers need to deliver a total of 15% of energy efficiency measures in rural areas and 10% of those can be the instalment of new and innovative products like devices that can enable homeowners to manage the energy efficiency of their homes.
